My Father is retired from the Air Force and I imagine that had I not gone into law, I probably would have followed his lead by joining the military. In fact, I was still toying with the idea during law school by looking into joining as a Judge Advocate General (JAG). My inspiration to become an attorney was probably some combination of watching my Stepfather, who was an attorney, and Joe Pesci’s character in “My Cousin Vinny.
” I think my biggest strength as an attorney is that I actually enjoy being a lawyer and practicing law. Because I enjoy what I do, when working a file, I always take the time to familiarize myself with the intricate details of the case and also to research the issues thoroughly in order to build the strongest case possible for my clients.
My favorite thing about practicing law is that I have the privilege to be able to litigate in a courtroom, which is something a lot of others can only watch on T.V. or in the movies. The fact that I get to help people while doing this is icing on the cake. When I took the Florida Bar Exam in July 2011, I was the only candidate out of well over 1,000 people still standing when the exam started.
I was having technical difficulties with my computer and the proctor for my row sent me to the wrong place to obtain the packet necessary to hand write my answers. I ended up missing probably the first 5 minutes of the exam, but when I finally got back to my spot and sat down I couldn’t help but laugh that it was I who had just experienced everyone in that room’s biggest fear at the time.
