James K. Hickman is Of Counsel at Butler Pappas. Jim joined the Tampa office of Butler Pappas in October, 2013 and is a member of the firm's Construction Defect Litigation Practice Group. Representing primarily architects, engineers and real estate professionals, he has handled numerous complex matters involving claims of negligence, breach of contract, personal injury, misrepresentation, fraud and nondisclosure.
Jim primarily handles cases throughout the State of Florida. Jim was recently named a Super Lawyer for 2014. This is an honor bestowed on attorneys who have attained a high degree of professional achievement and peer recognition. Prior to joining Butler Pappas, Jim was a shareholder at Forizs & Dogali, P.
A., in Tampa Florida where he also represented architects, engineers and real estate professionals. Prior to Forizs & Dogali, Jim worked as a Senior Associate at James Hoyer Newcomer & Smiljanich. At James Hoyer, Jim not only represented architects, engineers and real estate professionals but was also involved in Class Action litigation.
Prior to James Hoyer, Jim was employed by Blasingame Forizs & Smiljanich as an Associate and later as a Senior Associate. At Blasingame, Jim handled a wide variety of cases, including products liability, serious personal injury, environmental torts and coverage, premises liability and civil rights claims.
Jim has tried or arbitrated numerous cases to verdict. In addition, he has successfully resolved many cases through mediation. He has also served as appellate counsel in a number of cases. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Florida in 1988 and his Juris Doctrate, cum laude , from Stetson University College of Law in 1991.
At Stetson, Jim earned academic scholarships and was named First Place Advocate in the MaGuire, Voorhis & Wells Intramural Moot Court Competition in 1990. He is licensed to practice law in all Florida State Courts; the United States District Court, Middle District of Florida and the United States Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals.
His professional memberships include Defense Research Institute and Florida Defense Lawyers Association, Hillsborough County Bar Association, Construction Law Section and CLM. Jim has served on the Board of Directors for East Lake Little League for eight years and is currently a Vice President. He also is a member of the Student Advisory Counsel of Brooker Creek Elementary School located in Tarpon Springs, Florida.
In addition, Jim serves as the Lay Leader and sits on numerous committees at East Lake United Methodist Church.
