WHAT I WAS DOING BEFORE ENTERING THE LEGAL FIELD: My background has always been in real estate. In 2011, I began managing an investment fund that bought bulk note pools. I handled the acquisitions, the asset management, negotiations with borrowers, and then listed and sold the properties once the notes had been foreclosed on.
The rate of return on the fund was outstanding, and it grew exponentiallly in a very short period of time. MY EXPERIENCE AS A CONSUMER OF LEGAL SERVICES: The only weak link in my daily operations, was that any issue that required the services of legal counsel, caused me tremendous grief. I must have tried out five or six lawfirms, and was unable to find a lawyer with any sense of urgency about my legal matters.
The foreclosure/landlord-tenant attorneys I came across had no interest whatsoever in resolving my problem. They were in the business of pushing paper, acting busy, and finding ways to take what should have been a simple 15 minute thing, and turning it into a 3 day project. It was like they were being paid NOT to assist.
My cases sat on some paralegal's desk gathering dust for months, and I could never contact anyone when I needed to. WHY I BECAME AT ATTORNEY AT 44: After meeting with my investors, it was determined that the best way to continue to increase our overall rate of return was for me to handle the drafting, due diligence, foreclosures and evictions myself.
I went to lawschool with the intent of limiting the use of my law degree, to legal needs that arise within the context of investment fund management. I thought I had no interest in taking on other people's cases or providing legal services to strangers. The only people I wanted to provide legal services for, were the investors in the fund.
As the foreclosure crisis came to an end, I started taking on a few cases for friends and people I knew, and found that I loved civil litigation and had a knack for it. My intention was never to become a trial lawyer but that's what I ended up doing. I work 12 hours a day, and go to bed each night, knowing that I am doing what I was born to do, with a smile on my face.
MY FORTE: I'm very good with contentious and ugly business disputes and dissolutions, landlord/tenant disputes, evictions, debt collection, execution of judgments, debt settlement and negotiation, contractual disputes of all kinds (both litigation and pre-suit settlement and negotiation) and cases where litigation has been ongoing for a long time, and seems to have turned into a hopeless mess.
WHAT MAKES ME A LITTLE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER LAWYERS: a) IF I DON'T HAVE TIME TO GIVE A CASE 150%, I DON'T TAKE IT: I manage my case load very carefully, ensuring I never have more than 20 cases at a time. Anything more than that, and it becomes necessary to hand a large portion of the day to day case management to legal clerks, associates, or paralegals.
This, I won't do. I want to provide a level of attention to detail and unabashed service to my clients that is impossible to achieve when I don't monitor every detail. As one case closes, it opens up a spot for me to take on something else. This also means I have no interest in racking up billable hours, delaying proceedings or prolonging them.
The quicker I get resolution on one thing, the quicker I can move onto the next. I do what I set out to do, and it gets done like it matters. b) UPDATES: I've never had a client call to ask "what's going on" with their case. Before you get a chance to wonder what's happening, you'll already have received an email explaining.
c) BILLING : I've never had a misunderstanding with a client about money. I am exceedingly clear about fees and let people know what to expect, so there are never any surprises. I've also never been told by a client that my billing was unfair or my fees excessive. d) COMMUNICATION: You're going to be able to find me when you need to, and I respond to all emails within minutes.
Your lawyer will never be MIA. I am careful to explain all options, give a recommendation and outline all the reasons why I think that's the best option. f) INTEGRITY FIRST :I'm super passionate about what I do, because I don't take a case, unless I believe in whatever I'm going to be trying to prove.
There seems to be something interesting, unusual, or novel about every case that comes my way, and I find ever single part of the litigation process fascinating. I'm really nerdy, like that. The love for what I do, and the belief that my client's position is fair, proper and right, means I don't leave the office until everything that needed to be done that day, is done.
There is nothing worse than a person who was already aggrieved and hurt by the actions of another, to be taken advantage of a second time by the lawyer they hired to help right that wrong. A LITTLE ABOUT ME OUTSIDE OF WORK: I am originally from Texas, work in Weston and live in Davie. My dad's side of the family is Mexican and my mom's side is Lebanese.
I share my life with my husband of 27 years Rene, my two beloved daughters, who are now 24, and 25, and my naughty Miniature Schnauzer, Wrigley. HOW TO CONTACT ME: The best way to contact me is always going to be by email. When we need to talk by phone, we'll schedule a telephone conference, so I'll be waiting for your call.
Because I spend so much time in Court, my phone is on silent a good portion of the day. But if you send me an email or a text, I respond on receipt.
