About Susan Whaley Fox

Susan Fox is a founding member and shareholder in Fox & Loquasto, P.A., and manages the firm's Orlando office.  Ms. Fox is a Tampa native who received her B.A. from the University of Florida with honors in 1972 and her Juris Doctor from the UF College of Law with honors in 1976.  While in law school, Susan served on the Editorial Board of the University of Florida Law Review.

  After graduating, she was an Instructor of Legal Research and Legal Writing at UF.  In 1977,Fox  began working as an associate at Macfarlane Ferguson & McMullen in Tampa where she became a partner/shareholder in 1983, and continued her practice there until 2003 when she started the appellate firm of Fox & Loquasto.

  During her service with these two firms, Ms. Fox has handled a wide variety of appeals and extraordinary writs and gained comprehensive knowledge of how the appellate courts work and what they expect in briefs and legal documents and from oral argument.  She has been board-certified in appellate practice since 1994, the first year appellate board certification was possible.

Susan Fox is a past Chair of the Florida Bar’s Appellate Court Rules Committee and a past Chair of the Appellate Practice Section of the Florida Bar.  Ms. Fox served on the Appellate Practice Certification Committee of the Florida Bar, which sets certification standards for appellate lawyers and writes and grades certification exams from 2003 to 2010.

  She has published many articles and lectured for numerous CLE programs on appellate practice and on gender issues. Ms. Fox is one of the chapter authors of “Florida Appellate Practice,” Sixth  Seventh and Eighth  Editions, published by the Florida Bar as a guide to appellate practice in Florida.

  Ms. Fox and her partner, Wendy Loquasto, published “The Art of Persuasion Through Legal Citation” in the April 2010 edition of The Florida Bar Journal . Ms. Fox was President of Florida Association for Women Lawyers in 2001-2002 and of the Hillsborough Association for Women Lawyers in 1998-99, after having served in numerous other capacities on each board.

  She was an active member of the Hillsborough County Bar Association and co-chaired its Gender Racial Equality Committee in 1997-99.  It was under Ms. Fox’s leadership that the HCBA began the annual diversity program in conjunction with the Martin Luther King holiday.  She received the HCBA’s "Outstanding Pro Bono Service Award" on multiple occasions and The Florida Bar President’s Award for Pro Bono Service in 2000.

  In 2004 she received an outstanding achievement award from the Florida Commission on the Status of Women. Fox moved her law practice to Orlando in 2011 as a result of her marriage to Dr. David Gay, a sociology professor at University of Central Florida.  Since relocating, Ms. Fox has been active with Central Florida Association for Women Lawyers, chairing its award-winning Mentoring Program in 2012-2013 and on  its Board of Editors, 2013-14.

  She is also a member of the Appellate Committee of the Orange County Bar Association and of the Paul C. Perkins Bar Association. Ms. Fox enjoys art quilting and traditional patchwork, gardening, cooking, sailing, golf, and live music. She plays guitar and mandolin and has performed with several musical groups.

She has two adult daughters.
